Volunteers in Police Service The mission of the Modesto Police Department "Volunteers in Police Service" is to promote community participation by giving opportunities to civilians to use their experience and talents to assist the Police Department in fulfilling its mission. Why be a volunteer? To make a difference! Since September 11, 2001, the demands on state and local law enforcement have increased dramatically. The already limited resources of these agencies are being stretched further than ever, at a time when the country needs every available officer out on the beat. In many jurisdictions around the country, an exciting effort is underway. Civilians who have the time to volunteer in the community have offered their services to law enforcement agencies. This enables sworn officers to spend more time patrolling the streets. The roles of our VIPS range from clerical tasks, to bicycle patrol, citizen patrol and numerous other activities. Come join us! Bring your heart and your sense of humor to VIPS, along with your enthusiastic spirit. What you get back will be immeasurable! There are three ways to volunteer with the Modesto Police Department:
